The CPM has re-iterated its stand in support of Samikyandhra in tune with its policy of defending the unity of linguistic States.

A nine-member CPM delegation led by State Secretary B.V. Raghavulu met Justice Srikrishna and other members of the Committee at the Lakeview Guesthouse here on Friday and submitted a 12-page supplementary note in continuation of its earlier report.

During the 90-minute interaction, the CPM leaders clarified the doubts raised by the panel members. They said that the backwardness of the State was not confined to Telangana, North Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. They reasoned that there were inequalities not just between regions but among the various districts within the same region.

The CPM leaders said backwardness of Telangana area could not be seen in isolation. “It is not a feature peculiar to our State. The issues of uneven development and inequalities exist in all States,” Mr Raghavulu pointed out.

Briefing reporters later, Mr. Raghavulu said they had strongly pitched for a united State and impressed upon the panel that bifurcation of the State would only render injustice to regions. They stressed the need for prioritising irrigation projects which cater to the needs of Telangana and other backward areas of Andhra Pradesh.

The party mentioned that a comprehensive land distribution programme should be undertaken in the State with special focus on Telangana and Rayalaseema to break the grip of feudal forces. It suggested a crash programme to improve educational facilities in identified backward mandals and special attention to areas where health indicators are poor.

The CPM secretary said they also favoured special measures to be adopted to improve economic and social positions of the Dalits, tribals, minorities and artisan communities and a comprehensive study of imbalanced development among different regions, sub-regions, districts and mandals.
