The ruling Congress party in the state received a severe set-back when it’s nominee Kasani Gyaneshwar Goud was defeated in the Ranga Reddy council elections and thus proving that money bags cannot buy votes. The TDP candidate Narender Reddy trounced the Congress nominee, a sitting Independent member seeking re-election as a ruling party candidate, by a majority of 48 votes.

As expected the Congress and MIM candidates MS Prabhakar Rao and Syed Aminul Hasan Jafri won comfortably the two seats from the Hyderabad Local Authorities constituency in a triangular contest. But, the entry of the TDP candidate in the fray, the election was forced which otherwise would have been a unanimous one.

Though the TDP had fielded its nominee, the party along with BJP, CPI and CPM boycotted the elections minutes after the polling commenced protesting against the election process. This enabled the Congress and MIM nominees to get elected without any hurdle.

Polling for the three Council seats two in Hyderabad and one in Ranga Reddy was held on May 7 2010. Out of a total of 157 voters in the Hyderabad constituency only 127 exercised their franchise. While Prabhakar Rao of the Congress secured 69 votes, Jafri of the MIM got 55 votes and the TDP nominee got one vote.

All eyes were focused on the Ranga Reddy constituency as both the Congress and the TDP have taken the election as a prestigious issue. The constituency has an electorate 653 voters with the TDP having a majority. The Congress decided to field Gyneshwar Goud, an Independent sitting member of the Council whose term expired following the drawing of lots to decide the term of members. He had later floated Mana Party and even fielded his candidates in the 2009 elections. The TDP fielded Narender Reddy, brother of a party MLA.
