Congress, TDP and the TRS are gearing up to face one of the most prestigious and keenly watched by-polls in the Telangana region.
The by-polls in the 12 Assembly constituencies in Telangana was necessitated after 10 TRS members and one each of BJP and TDP resigning(sacrificing) their seats for the cause of separate statehood of Telangana. The Election Commission indicated that the by-polls would be held before August 30 and thus not only cleared the suspense surrounding it but also electrified the political atmosphere in the region.
Though divergent views were aired in the ruling Congress about the party entering the electoral battle, the declaration by the AICC in-charge of party affairs in the state, Veerappa Moily that the Congress would contest the by-polls has cleared the mist. Even the party leaders from the region who were for “boycotting” the by-poll were forced to fall in line after the central leadership made its stance clear.
The APCC President, Mr. D. Srinivas, who was defeated from Nizamabad Urban constituency in the last elections and also missed the bus to enter the Legislative Council as well as Rajya Sabha, is bound to seek re-election from the same constituency. He has already begun his spade work to meet the challenges from not only the sitting BJP member who had resigned but also from the TDP and TRS. He also been holding strategic consultations with senior party leaders regarding the Congress game plan to checkmate the opposition challenge in the other constituencies.
Meanwhile the TDP leaders from the region, who too were against contesting the by-polls in the beginning, seem to have had change of heart and declared that the party would enter the fray if the Congress contests. Now with the ruling party’s stance coming into the open, TDP too is preparing itself for the mini electoral battle.
The TRS, which is the root cause for forcing its 10 members to quit besides one each from BJP and TDP, has been very vocal in wanting the other parties to stay from the contest. However now with the Congress and the TDP certain to contest, it has become a do or die battle for the TRS for a second time as it has been mauled in the last by-polls by the former two parties.
The Telangana (political) JAC headed by Prof. Kodandaram has been repeatedly warning the Congress and the TDP from contesting the by-elections and declared that the people of the region would give a fitting reply to the two parties for their anti-Telangana policies.
Even the JAC of students of OU and Kakatiya University have also sounded a stern warning to the Congress and TDP not venture about entering the poll battle.
Amidst this electrified atmosphere, the political parties are also working out ways and means to rope in other parties for an electoral alliance. The PRP has already indicated that it would join hands with the ruling party in the elections. The TDP is also making efforts to strike a deal with the Left parties and the TRS on the other hand is preparing itself to wage a war on its own.
The strategy to be adopted in the coming by-elections was discussed in depth at the politbureau meeting of the TRS presided by the party President Mr. K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
