Unite or Perish

Our fathers fought in 1969. It was like an uncoordinated guerilla fight, spontaneous and violent, a sudden outburst which got extinguished as quickly as it got started. It was students and young people who came onto streets and believed that the state would bow down and give them a separate state. To their surprise the state dealt with them with an iron hand. Using media blackout, they violently crushed the movement with hundreds killed, thousands injured, and most of the agitators jailed. The state then blackmailed, threatened or bought the political leaders to give up all aspirations for statehood.

That was 42 years ago.
Surprisingly, the flame though small, was protected and carried by few of those broken fighters of 1969, till it got the necessary fuel to become a conflagration now. This time around we are prepared for a long battle. This time we are not uncoordinated. This time we are a polished machine. This time around the state will not be able to crush us. We had nearly 15 years to prepare for this. We prepared songs, thousands of them. We wrote books, hundreds of them. We made slogans, we made flags; we made t-shirts and stickers, and wore them proudly. We created hundreds of JACs, we mobilized millions of people.

Back in 1969, a political party came after the agitation was suppressed. Now, we have a political party to begin with, not one, but many of them. This time around we don’t dance to the tune of politicians but make the politicians dance to our tune. We are no longer ready to be betrayed by our politicians. We are organized, sophisticated and we spread messages through electronic, print and voice medium. We mobilize thousands with few SMS. We are not the same as 1969 agitated fighters. We are calm, composed, and determined. We are not just young men and students. We are grandfathers, fathers, uncles; we are grandmothers, mothers, aunts; we are professors, lawyers, bankers, miners, engineers, doctors, farmers, workers, laborers; we are school going children, we are young students. And we are prepared.

This time around, we are in for a long haul. We say, ‘bring it on’. The more you suppress us, betray us, play with us, mock us, ridicule us, the more we get determined. The more resolute we become. The best way to unite us now is to suppress us the way you are doing. You have underestimated us. You thought, ‘Ha! These lazy Telanganas! They will skitter away at the sign of first danger’. ‘Ah! These naïve Telanganas! We can just manipulate them’. No! You face a different adversary now. We are not going to skitter away. We are not going to believe your false promises or false statistics. Our sentiment is not going to wither away. It is only going to get stronger till we attain Telangana.

This is 2011.
Thomas Jefferson said ‘every generation needs a new revolution’. We are the new generation and this is our revolution. This generation is not ready to listen to petty excuses of older generation (like those who comprised Srikrishna Committee). We are not going to fall for your geriatric antics. We are not going to foolishly accept your foolish suggestions. We will call your bluff.

We have very high expectations from this nation. We call upon this nation to live up to its ideals. We dream big. We dream just. We dream of a prosperous, harmonious, inclusive and equitable Telangana. And we are ready work towards it. We believe in our democracy. And we will use politics for its logical end. We use KCR. We use the politicians to toe our line. We, the people of Telangana, want Telangana. And you politicians better get it for us.

“A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history…”

This is our moment. And this is our time to make history. This is not the time to ‘dither or dilly-dally’. This is not the time to be timid and be complacent. This is the time to unite. We say to you: O! Politicians of Telangana! Keep your differences away! Get united for the cause of Telangana. Show us you mean it when you say it. Come under one banner. Fight for Telangana. Fight for your people. And be spared. Otherwise, be ready to perish. If we can’t make history for ourselves, we will make you history!
