Re-visit : JP – Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde

JP, the self-styled intellectual politician, preaches insincere Olympian political philosophy and practices disgusting sleazy politics. He came in to politics hoping that coalition politics will develop in the state as elsewhere and become CM taking advantage of the fractured mandate. But providence disposed it otherwise and he was shown his proper place. Yet he does not understand it. With one seat in the assembly, he behaves like a national leader. His constituency is very small. Most of his clientele is from his own community. Some naively idealistic educated people believe in him and soon get disillusioned. The hardnosed common people never believed his hollow sermons .Therefore he was trounced in 249 seats out of 250, his party has contested, denouncing his hypocrisy. In the one seat, he himself has won, he did every sleazy thing a desperate political brinkmanship can afford; used caste, money, compromise with opposition parties etc., the very opposite of what he preaches in his Olympian philosophy. Yet he has the gumption to pose like a reformer, a characteristic feature of his tribe and saver of the civil society.

It reminds us the dual personality of the character Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, created by Robert Stevenson, the Scottish writer in his novel. The only difference is Stevenson’s character transforms from one to the other personality and behaves accordingly. But it is different with this ‘intellectual’; he wants to look like Dr.Jekyll but actually is Mr. Hyde. He has different sets of Hydean principles for andhras,Telanganites, his own community and other communities. It is a potpourri of neo-fascism.

1. When he was chief of A.P.State co-op Bank, he lent huge amounts of loans to rich farmers and industrialists of his own region and community bending rules and neglecting the small and medium farmers for whom the funds were primarily intended. Most of these loans were never recovered.
2. In Kolleru when Supreme Court has appointed an empowered committee to oversee the rehabilitation of Kolleru lake, hope lessly ravaged by the money mafia belonging to his own community, he has supported the money mafia and said that supreme court has given more importance to save birds than human beings.
3. He does not believe in the violations of agreements with Telangana people by andhras.He says that the aspiration of 4 crore Telangana people for separate Telangana State is nothing to him. The suicides of 600 youth for Telangana is of no consequence to him. He alleges that the agitatation of Telangana students as black mail and the students are doing agitations for collecting money from industrialists.

These are some of the ‘exalted’ beliefs of our intellectual MLA. His intellect is reeking with regionalism, casteism and feudalism. This is the gratitude this intellectual is showing to Telangana voters who have voted for him with the belief that he is really an intellectual and can understand their problems without bias. But his true ‘Hydean’ personality has come out on the floor of the assembly like many of his Andhra colleagues. With one seat in a 295 seat assembly in a people’s democracy, if he can express such outrageously autocratic feelings, what cannot he do if he gets a chance to preside over a totalitarian government. I am sure he has all the makings of becoming another Hitler, Stalin or one more Caligula if he is given a chance. No democratic principles, no education can change the cussed Andhra bias in these people. This rabidity of Andhra chauvinism and arrogance is to be treated like we treat real rabid dogs. Nothing else works.
