The Lok Satta Party president Jaya Prakash Narayan was allegedly attacked by Telangana supporters on the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly premises on Thursday. While most of the political leaders came down heavily on TRS leaders for the incident, Jaya Prakash Narayan said the assault was not on him, but on the values of democracy. Notably, there were n number of leaders– who were also not supporting T cause—present at the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, why only JP was attacked? What could be the reasons behind the same? What prompted the T loyalists to lose their temper? A special report.

Jaya Prakash Narayan, a bureaucrat-turned- leader who says, Sun rays cannot be stopped by holding palm against it, is undoubtedly a man of talent, intellect and personality. When his party ‘Lok Satta’ was established, I still remember the people in Hyderabad and in other parts of Telangana region holding the flags of Lok Satta with a star symbol on it. I then enquired a group of youngsters as to why they were holding flags. ‘The true leader has come’, replied the firm voices years ago. The people, especially the youth were convinced by the attractive speeches of the talented person, who promised them a better future. The leader, who told it is we who have to clean the nation. And the people of Telangana respected him, so much that knowing that he was from non-Telangana region, he was still chosen as their representative from Telangana region. The only one seat that the party won was in Hyderabad.

As days passed, the movement for Telangana State became stronger and finally the Union Government of India—after noticing the intensity of the movement—declared that the process for the formation of Telangana would be intiated. It is known that this statement was not liked by some imperialistic forces in Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh, who came out with ‘United AP Slogan’ overnight and confused the Central Government. Whereas, this mere confusion gave enough scope for the Centre to buy time on T, the Lok Satta Party chief came into the picture then. He met the prime minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi and elucidated the situation. He later briefed the media that there wasn’t any need to bifurcate the state in such a situation. Though he was exercising his fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression, what he said was his mere personal opinion and not the opinion of Telangana (Hyderabad) people in general as it is known that Telangana Movement touched peak then and everyone in Hyderabad and in remaining nine districts of Telangana region were found raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans. Advocates were taking out peaceful rallies, sea of students were supporting the cause, Joint Action Committees were being formed and unfortunately JP failed to notice the same or over looked it giving due importance to his personal opinion.

This act clearly projected that he had failed as a leader. Besides this, moments before he was assaulted today he gave a strong speech, which more or less not insulted the region but the country in general and in the statements he made, a clear intention to overthrow the government was found. His statements that –imposing Presidents’s rule was better and sacrifices of freedom fighters went waste—prove the same. Today, the technology is vast spread and so the media. Making such statements while entire international media was putting an eye on India—as a part of their duty to get news from every nook and corner of the world—will undoubtedly harm the Country’s Sovereignty and Integrity.

Further, when people get disappointed with the system and chain of scams, public representatives should see to it that people don’t lose faith in democracy. Instead, JP acted vice-versa. In fact, there were only peaceful protests going on and JP seems to have exaggerated the issue and tried to make use of the situation to fetch political gains.

It may be noted here that when Osmania University students were caned on their campus for exercising their fundamental rights, astonishingly JP chose not to utter a word. Almost every political party expressed their solidarity with the attacked journalists—in the incident—JP, however, never said democracy was taken for a toss.
Even when public representatives from Seemandhra region resorted to blackmail politics by resigning for the posts one after the other, JP preferred to be a mute spectator. May be he was looking forward for president’s rule then also. Eventually, the people of the T region started disliking him. The bandh call only in Seemandhra region—for assault on JP—proves the same . It may be mentioned here that T activists were demanding resignation of JP.

A public representative—elected by the public and for the public should never give a damn to the sentiments and demands of the people . Further, an ideal politician in democracy will never endorse president’s rule.

Jai Hind, Jai Telangana.
