Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday criticized the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre for not making any concrete decision on the issue of bifurcation in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.

Talking to mediapersons in New Delhi, Sitharaman said: “I am a political party representative. Sorry, if my speech verges on a chance to hit at my opponent, but I will do it because I have substantial reasons to do it here.”

“The political opponent believes in buying time and believes in postponing decisions which are crucial and critical to people. As a result of this, Telangana has become a very critical issue, thanks to their nearly 50 years of rule in Andhra Pradesh.”

“There cannot be a doubt that by procrastination and by delaying critical decisions, issues in Andhra Pradesh have got complicated,” she added.

Sitharaman also said that the Central government could have formed a commission, which would ensure the decision-making process to speed up.

The four-decade-old demand for Telangana to be carved out of the economically less developed part of Andhra Pradesh gathered momentum last year after the Central government accepted it in principle.

However, the decision triggered a backlash from those opposed to breaking up Andhra Pradesh, forcing the ruling Congress-led coalition to backtrack.

The Central government has appointed a judicial commission headed by former Supreme Court Justice Srikrishna to look into issue.

The report, submitted to Chidambaram in December last year, had suggested at least six options, including maintaining the status quo in the state or bifurcating the state.
