With assembly elections in five states set to be completed by May 11, the Centre is bracing for fresh unrest in Andhra Pradesh over the Telangana issue. The MHA is already looking at post-election troops deployment plan in anticipation of a resumption of stir for a separate Telangana.
It be recalled that Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had, just before the start of polling across Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, said that any decision on Telangana would be taken only after the completion of the assembly polls.
This had convinced players in the Telangana region to put off their statehood stir and enable trouble-free elections.
Five months have passed since submission of the report on Telangana issue by the Justice BL Srikrishna committee. The report had laid down six scenarios, of which Centre found options no. five and six mooting division of Andhra Pradesh to form a separate Telangana and keeping Andhra Pradesh united while conferring special status to Telangana respectively, realistic.
Even though parties like the TRS, the BJP , the Left and the TDP have firmed up their stance on the demand for Telangana, the Congress remains deeply divided over the issue. The Congress MPs from Andhra as well as MLAs are split along regional lines, and central leadership has been unable to evolve a consensus on whether to keep Andhra united or carve out a separate state of Telangana.
The threat of resignation by the pro-Telangana legislators in the event of rejection of their statehood demand has weighed on the minds of the party’s central leadership and deterred them from forcing their way on the thorny issue.
