Damodar Raja Narasimha is ‘Dy CM’

A senior Minister from Telangana region Damodar Raja Narasimham was on Friday appointed as the Deputy CM. A Dalit leader from Medak district, he will be entrusted with the Home portfolio in the cabinet reshuffle, expected to take place within the next 10 days.

The elevation of Raja Narasimha, a three-time legislator representing Andhole reserved constituency, is seen as a desperate bid by the ruling party to assuage the feelings of Telangana leaders and cool down the political temperature in the volatile region.

The State Governor ESL Narasimhan issued a notification, appointing Raja Narasimham as the Deputy CM, a post that has been revived in the state after a gap of 18 years. The political compulsions thrown up by the intensifying Telangana statehood movement appear to have prompted the Congress central leadership to create the post.

However, the pro-Telangana leaders within and outside the ruling party asserted that offering Deputy CM post to the region would not, in any way, dilute the movement nor would it diminish their resolve to fight for the statehood cause. “It is only a token gesture. It will not change the situation on the ground,” the Congress MP V Hanumantha Rao said.

Fifty-three year old Raja Narasimham was first inducted into the cabinet in 2004 by former chief minister late YS Rajasekhar Reddy. He has been continuing in the ministerial position since then. A suave and soft spoken Dalit leader, Raja Narasimham is not known to participate aggressively in the Telangana movement. He has been chosen for his low-profile approach.
