The central leadership of the Congress will take a decision on Telangana statehood in the coming few weeks, Deputy Chief Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha said here on Wednesday.

“Very soon, the Centre will announce its decision. I am confident that a solution will emerge and I will abide by whatever decision the Centre takes. The high command is very serious about settling the issue as it realises it cannot remain silent when people of all regions are vexed and want an early decision,” he observed.

The Deputy Chief Minister, who spent five days in New Delhi meeting AICC president Sonia Gandhi and several other Central leaders to discuss the political situation, however, described it as thanksgiving visit. “Several issues, including Telangana and implementation of NREGA, came up for discussion with Ms Gandhi,” he said.

The AICC president had stressed on the social justice angle and expressed concern about the need to ensure inclusive growth by giving due share to all, particularly weaker sections and women. “She feels power should be properly distributed to ensure equality,” he said.

In a freewheeling interview to The Hindu at his bungalow in Banjara Hills on Wednesday, Mr. Rajanarasimha denied that he had spoken about the creation of Regional Development Council for Telangana, an issue that evoked protests from various quarters in Telangana on Wednesday. “It was the creation of the media,” he asserted while referring to his press conference in New Delhi.

He said the threats by some Ministers, Congress MPs, and MLAs to resign if the Centre fails to decide on Telangana by July 1 was purely their personal decision. “We need to protect the party and get things done,” he noted.

Asked about the role he envisaged for himself as Deputy Chief Minister, a post revived after a considerable gap, the Dalit leader said: “My role is to strengthen the party and take its message to all. Whatever programmes the party has announced must be implemented. The message should reach everyone that an opportunity has been given to a Dalit.”

To a question whether he was satisfied with his existing portfolio of Higher Education or wished a weightier subject in tune with the change in his status, he said it was the prerogative of the Chief Minister.
