Green signal for another lift irrigation scheme in T

The state government has given the green signal for yet another lift irrigation (LI) scheme in the Telangana region on the Krishna. The major irrigation department has been asked to get a detailed survey done and prepare a project report.

According to sources in the department, the new lift irrigation project will come up at Narayanpet and is estimated to cost around Rs 7,000 crore. It will be part of the 46 fast-track irrigation projects under Jalayagnam.

The proposed new project in fact will be more of an extension of the ongoing Bhima lift irrigation project near Makthal in Mahbubnagar district. The new project falls under Kodangal assembly constituency of the district. It will lift water from the Bhootpur reservoir or the Sangamabanda reservoir and carry water up to Kodangal. This would help irrigate about two lakh acres. A private agency would take up the survey works at a cost of Rs 75 lakh, sources said. Once the report is ready, the government would give the administrative sanction for the project.

However, the project’s speedy take-off and completion would depend on the availability of funds. Even the ongoing projects under Jalayaganam, which were to start releasing water for irrigation from this kharif, have not been completed though they required only Rs 500 crore.

Similarly, the Bhima lift irrigation project which was to be ready by 2008 kharif is unlikely to be ready even before the 2012 kharif season.
