After his statements about Congress party drew flak from Telangana supporters, Union Petroleum Minister S Jaipal Reddy clarified that he did not make the statement in the context of Andhra Pradesh politics.

“Congress is a true nationalist party. We don’t subscribe to regionalism and sub-regionalism. For us India comes first and last,” he said at the function organised on the occasion of assumption of office by the new state Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana.

However, pro-Telangana leaders including TRS leader B Vinod Kumar described these comments, which Reddy made earlier during the day, to be anti-Telangana.

“Jaipal Reddy never made serious efforts for separate Telangana, though he belonged to the region,” they alleged.

Jaipal Reddy, however, clarified later that he was not speaking in the context of Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, but was speaking in a national perspective.

Replying to various queries, he said there are certain restrictions on him as a Cabinet minister and that he would not like to go beyond his brief.
