The government would take up the Telangana issue after Tuesday’s Cabinet reshuffle, a senior Congress leader said on Monday. The leader, who declined to be identified, said the Telangana issue was accorded top priority. He declined to hazard any guess as to what the solution could be, but insisted that the government would have to be a “bit concrete” about its plans to address concerns of all sides.

He said with the Monsoon Session of Parliament scheduled to start from August 1, the matter could become serious if the government failed to come out with some solution in the coming days. He said possible options could be speaking of a time-bound solution to the vexed issue, keeping the question on the city of Hyderabad “open” and forming a State Reorganis-ation Commission. Asked about the Telangana imbroglio at the regular AICC briefing, the party spokesman, Mr Abhishek Singhvi, said, “The only option is balance, patience and not queering the pitch by provocative statements either from this podium or from your fraternity.”

Noting that the Congress and the government were not unaware or ignorant about the sensitivities and sensibilities of the issue, Mr Singhvi said, “We are aware that the atmosphere is surcharged. We understand the emotions.” The Congress and the Centre are in a fix on this issue after the resignations of MPs, MLAs and ministers from Telangana region, and the demands from Seemandhra to keep AP united. With agitations intensifying, the party and the government are expected to make a move to quell tempers.
