The agitation for a separate Telangana state intensified yesterday with more players entering the field. On Monday, students clashed with police in Hyderabad and Warangal district, while Telangana leaders of ruling Congress party decided to go on a fast later this week and CPI workers decided to lay a siege to district collectorates in the region. Osmania University campus in Hyderabad was on the boil once again as a group of more than 50 students launched an indefinite hunger strike in support of a separate state.
Tensions started rising after police raided hostels in the campus and took several students into custody around midnight last night after the students’ Joint Action Committee decided to launch the hunger strike from yesterday. There were clashes during the day when a group of students tried to take out a procession from the campus to the Assembly. Angry students pelted stones at police and police used force to control them.
The students on fast are demanding that the federal government should either announce the formation of Telangana state or accept the resignation of all elected representatives of the regions.
Leaders of various political parties were also arrested when they were on their way to meet the fasting students on the campus.
Those arrested include Congress MPs Gutta Sukhinder Reddy, Madhu Yashki, Manda Jagannadhan, K. Keshav Rao, TRS leaders T. Harish Rao, K. Taraka Rama Rao, E. Rajinder, rebel TDP leader N. Janardhan Reddy, BJP leaders Bandaru Dattatreya and Ch Vidyasagar Rao. They strongly condemned their arrest and said that it shows that the present government does not have any respect for the democratic and constitutional rights of the people for the peaceful protest. Meanwhile, Telangana Congress leaders have decided to go on hunger strike on July 13 and 14. The meeting was attended by Members of Parliament, Assembly and Council who had tendered their resignations recently.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, K. Jana Reddy and Keshav Rao said that they have also formed a coordination committee to work along with the other pro-Telangana organisations.
They condemned the reports in a section of media that the Telangana Congress leaders were planning to launch their own regional party.
“This is a baseless report aimed at creating confusion. We will remain in Congress party and fight for Telangana state,” said Jana Reddy. They also made it clear that they won’t withdraw their resignations.
He warned the “Andhra media” not to indulge in false propaganda and said that the Telangana Congress leaders can take the matter to the Press Council of India.
Meanwhile, police used force against the students of Kakatiya University when they tried to stop the Bus Yatra of Telugu Desam Telangana Forum led by E. Dayakar Rao.
