Cong remains firm, Speaker to decide on Telangana MPs

Barring a governorship for former Andhra Pradesh chief minister K Rosaiah, the Congress is unlikely to go in for any course correction in the state despite the resignation of its MPs and MLAs over the Telangana issue. On Saturday night, the Congress general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, called up party MPs from Telangana region in a final attempt to persuade them to withdraw their resignations. But with the MPs refusing to re-consider their decision, the party high command has now left it to the presiding officers of the two Houses of Parliament to take a call on the 10 MPs.
While the resignation of two MPs who faxed their letters to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar could be rejected, the Speaker could decide “either way” on the resignations of seven others.
“We are ready to face bypolls in five-six seats if it comes to that,” said a senior party leader.
The issue was said to have been discussed at the Congress core group meeting on Sunday evening. As for the MLAs, whose resignations have been rejected by the Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker, the Telangana Joint Action Committee has asked them to resign again. Meanwhile, Rosaiah is likely to be made governor as the Centre is set to fill the vacancies in some states later this week.
While Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva, who has a good rapport with Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, is learnt to be lobbying to replace Surjit Singh Barnala in Tamil Nadu, sources said she is unlikely to be moved to Chennai.
Sources said Mizoram Governor Lt Gen M M Lakhera, who has sought an extension on health grounds, may be allowed to continue. As the terms of Kerala and Madhya Pradesh Governors are also over, the search is on for suitable candidates.
