Telangana ministers had an eventful Independence Day on Monday. Other than hoisting the national Tricolour, they also hoisted the Telangana flag in parts of the district, had eggs thrown at them by T-agitators and faced protests. At Adilabad, protestors threw eggs on the backward classes minister, Mr Basavaraj Saraiah’s convoy. The the police also had to arrest the Telugu Desam rebel MLA, Mr Jogu Ramanna, and his associates for raising Telangana slogans at the Parade Grounds when the minister was about to address the gathering after hoisting the national flag in the district headquarters.
In Hyderabad, the suspended Telugu Desam MLA, Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy, created a flutter in the Assembly premises where he tried to raise the Telangana flag along with the Indian Tricolour. He was, however, stopped by the police who forcibly took away the Telangana flag from him. This led to a war of words of sorts between the rebel TD MLA and the cops. When the Assembly Speaker, Mr Nadendla Manohar, arrived to hoist the national flag, he was accosted by a furious Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy. “I met the Speaker and he called me for talks at around 2 pm on Tuesday. We will convince him to accept our resignations. Telangana people should be united to achieve statehood,” said Dr Reddy.
Telangana ministers, who are staying away from their official duties, participated in Independence Day celebrations despite protests. The minister for information technology, Mr Ponnala Laxmaiah, had a particularly tough time in Warangal where he hoisted the national flag. At Gun Park too, Telangana activists raised “Jai Hind” and “Jai Telangana” slogans, forcing the police to intervene.
High drama at Gun Park over T
High drama prevailed at Gun Park, when police prevented Congress leaders belonging to Telangana region from hoisting the national flag at the Telangana martyrs memorial on the eve of Independence Day on Monday. The leaders staged a dharna for some time with the flags in their hands and raised slogans of “Jai Telangana”. The MPs reacted sharply to the police action.
In Adilabad, the MLA, Mr Jogu Ramanna, and other Telangana agitators protested against minister Mr Basavaraj Saraiah, for taking part in official Independence Day celebrations in spite of resigning for the Telangana cause. A nervous Mr Saraiah, however, said that the Congress was committed to the formation of a separate Telangana state and pointed out that before he had attended the official Independence Day function, he had hoisted the national flag along with the Telangana flag at their party office in the district headquarters.
The convener of the Telangana Joint Action Committee, Prof. Kodandaram, also hoisted the National Flag and the Telangana flag at the TJAC office. The BJP leader, Mr Ch Vidyasagar Rao, was also present. “It’s unfortunate that Independence Day was celebrated at the butt of a gun. It’s an insult to Independence. When people don’t get respect, what is the point of celebrating Independence Day?” Prof. Kodandaram said.
The PCC chief, Mr Botsa Satyanarayana, the TD chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, Congress leader, Mr Chiranjeevi, the BJP president, Mr G. Kishan Reddy, and other leaders also hoisted the national flags.
