The Congress president Ms. Sonia Gandhi is believed to be thinking of setting up a committee under the leadership of her son and party General Secretary Mr. Rahul Gandhi, to ease the situation in the boiling Telangana region.

The Congress party high command is in a fix as it is unable to take a decision on the Telangana tangle. Party leaders from the Telangana region are insisting that the leadership should take a decision instantaneously and the leaders from the Andhra region are also equally adamant that Telangana should not be conceded. In this situation, the Congress party needed a temporary solution to the problem to ease the situation in the Telangana region and also pacify the party leaders of Telangana.

The deadline set by the Congress Telangana leaders is ending by Friday. It may be recalled that the AICC state in charge Mr. Gulam Nabi Azad has told the Telangana Congress leaders that the Congress leadership would find a solution to the problem within two months. The two months time set by him would be ending on September 30. Congress leaders including several MLAs, MPs and Ministers have gone to New Delhi to remind Mr. Azad about the deadline. But Mr. Azad, who has been away from the country for ten days, has not even submitted his report on the talks he has held with the party leaders from the Andhra and Telangana regions to Ms. Sonia Gandhi so far. Ms. Gandhi would be able to take a decision only on receiving the report form Mr. Azad. It is most unlikely that she would receive the report by the deadline. In this situation, the Congress party needed a good reason for postponing the decision further. So it wants to involve Mr. Rahul Gandhi in the process, hoping that his intervention could ease the situation.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi has already started showing interest in the Telangana issue. He has been of late talking to the leaders of both the regions, with a view to understand the problem.

Sources in the AICC say that the Congress leadership has been thinking of three different solutions to the Telangana problem. The first is creating Telangana minus Hyderabad. Telangana leaders are most unlikely to accept this proposal. However, Andhra leaders might accept the proposal. The second proposal being considered by the Congress High Command is to create Telangana state and keep Hyderabad as the common capital for ten years. Though Telangana leaders might accept this proposal, Andhra leaders might not, say sources. The third proposal is to give autonomous status to the Telangana region and keep the state united. This is not acceptable to the Telangana leaders. They are unlikely to accept anything other than creation of the Telangana state. It is learnt that Mr. Azad has prepared these three proposals and is believed to be discussing about them with other Congress top leaders. However, Telangana congress leaders are not hopeful that these proposals would ease the situation. In this event, the party leadership might appoint another high power committee, under Mr. Rahul Gandhi, sources in the AICC say.
