The MIM president, Asaduddin Owaisi’s meeting with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, created a stir in political circles in the wake of the ongoing Sakala Janula Samme mass agitation. The purpose of Owaisi’s visit was to present a research study on the status of Muslims in AP to Rao, but they spent an hour together discussing the status of Muslims as well as the burning Telangana issue.

This is the first time Owaisi has met Mr Chandrasekhar Rao after the Telangana struggle reached its peak.

The MIM has kept away from the Telangana struggle, but another social Muslim outfit, the Jamat-e-Islami, is backing Telangana statehood. Sources in the TRS said Chandrasekhar Rao sought the support of the MIM on the Telangana issue in the wake of Owaisi’s recent statement that bifurcation of the state was not that easy.

When contacted, Owaisi told this newspaper that he had met the TRS chief merely to submit a copy of the research study titled ‘Socio-economic status of AP Muslims’. The research focuses on the socio economic status of Muslims in the last five years.
It shows that Muslims have poor literacy levels, poor income levels, need more reservations and special impetus to uplift them in all spheres.

Asked whether he had discussed the Telangana issue and whether Mr Chandrasekhar Rao sought the MIM’s support for the ongoing agitation for a separate Telangana, Mr Owaisi admitted that they did discuss Telangana.

“When two politicians meet we don’t just discuss the weather. Of course, we discussed several issues pertaining to the ongoing Telangana agitation,” he said. On whether the TRS chief sought the MIM’s support, he parried the question saying several issues pertaining to Telangana came up during the discussion but the focus was more on the research study.
