Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has met the Congress president and the UPA Chairperson Ms. Sonia Gandhi on Monday and is believed to have offered to quit his post in the wake of the controversy created by the finance ministry’s note on his role in the 2 G Spectrum scam. In a day of quick developments, the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is believed to be an adversary of Chidambaram, has also met the Congress supremo and held discussions with her.

Ms. Sonia Gandhi is believed to be making efforts to usher truce between the two top leaders of the party and the government, as their differences have now become almost public. Taking a serious view of the situation, she is said to have asked the party leaders to take up trouble shooting operation to save the prestige of the party and the two ministers. Party honchos are now busy with that operation, even as the Opposition BJP is using the finance ministry’s memo to demand Chidambaram’s resignation.

Pranab Mukherjee, a seasoned politician was all praise for Chidambaram, when the media accosted him. He said Chidambaram was a pillar of strength both the government and the party. He said PC was a valued colleague. Whatever Pranab said of Chidambaram, fact appears to be that his hand was definitely there behind the predicament now being faced by the Home Minister. It is being said that the note from the Finance Ministry could not have gone, without the knowledge of Mukherjee.
