More than 200 members of Kakatiya University Joint Action Committee (KUJAC) and Telangana Students’ JAC targeted IT minister Ponnala Lakshamaiah’s residence in Ramnagar here on Wednesday demanding his fresh resignation on Telangana. In the melee that ensued for 20 minutes on Wednesday afternoon, the students vandalised furniture, including dining tables and chairs kept in the ground floor besides damaging window glasses, flexi-boards, an aquarium and a portrait of UPA chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi. A rare photograph of Mr Ponnala Lakshamaiah, seen posing with the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, which was hung high on the walls in the ground floor, was left untouched by the students.

Sources said in two separate batches, the students, which also included nearly 50 girls, forcibly managed to gain entry in the afternoon by taking the police personnel posted near the minister’s residence by surprise. The vandalism by student leaders, who raised slogans against the minister and briefly staged a sit-in protest demanding his resignation, continued long as skeletal police presence at the minister’s residence prevented timely action. Sources said that a few security staff posted at the minister’s residence had left for the nearby District party office of Telugu Desam in Ramnagar, where a crowd of 100 advocates led by Warangal bar association president Rao Amarender Reddy went there to lay siege and defaced TD’s signboard with black colour.

However, before the students could resort to any further damage, the Subedari and Hanamkonda police swung into action immediately and arrested 18 KUJAC and TSJAC leaders, including KUJAC chairman Sadu Rajesh, who were shifted to Subedari police station. Meanwhile, the arrest of student leaders has been condemned by TRS district convenor Peddi Sudershan Reddy, who alleged that students were tortured in Subedari police lock-up before they were shifted to Dharmasagar and Zafargad police stations. “The police are being pressurized to register non-bailable cases against the students,” he alleged.
