Expressing concern over the way the state was being affected due to continuous agitations being taken up with the prime demand for carving out a separate Telangana state by its supporters, local MP, Mr Vundavalli Arun Kumar, called upon them to resolve the issue through debate and discussion in a democratic manner. Giving details of several states formed in the country earlier, the MP said, “No state was formed by taking up agitations and resorting to violence to mount pressure upon the Centre to concede to their demands. The process was only through dialogue and consultations. Moreover, it is the Centre which has the ultimate authority, either to accept or reject demands for separate states in a federal set-up like India.”

The MP told reporters here on Tuesday that he was misquoted in a section of the media over his deliberations with Telangana leaders in the lobby of Parliament during its last session held on September 8. He said that he spoke to several Telangana leaders, underlining the importance of a thorough debate and discussion on the proposed setting up of a separate state among elected representatives from both the Telangana and Seema-Andhra regions to mobilise support for their cause.

He said, “Elected representatives from both the Telangana and Seema-Andhra regions have the responsibility to convince each other on their demands in the first instance, and if the issue fails to be resolved among them, it can then be taken to the people. Agitations and violence will aggravate the issue and at times, work against the very purpose for which they are being organised. I, as an individual, favour a united state for rapid growth and development. However, as a loyal worker of the party, I will go by the decision of the Congress party.” Mr Vundavalli refused to disclose what transpired during discussion with leaders from Telangana in Parliament lobbies, stating that it would be unethical.
