As the indefinite strike by the Government employees and teachers in support of a separate Telangana State completed a month on Wednesday and with restlessness on the rise across the region, Congress members of the Lok Sabha from the region have openly revolted against the party leadership.

Apart from meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to press her to accept their pending resignations, the nine MPs have also decided to participate in the three-day-long rail roko agitation in Telangana from Saturday. “As the party leadership has still not come out with its decision on demand for Telangana State, we are compelled to take a decision to participate in the rail roko to reflect the aspirations of the people,” K Rajagopal Reddy, Congress MP from Bhongir stated.

He said that they had been forced to fight against the Government of their own party because of the delay in taking a decision by the party leadership. “Now we have to participate in the agitation to stop the continuing suicides by the people of Telangana,” Manda Jagannatham said. The eight MPs who met the Speaker this evening include Madhu Yashki, Gutta Sukhinder Reddy, Rajagopal Reddy, Balram Naik, S Rajaih, M Jagannadham, G Vivek and Ponnam Prabhakar.

They have announced that each of them will participate in the rail roko programme at a different place. Balram Naik will be stopping the trains at Mahbubabad and S Rajaiah will take part in the programme at Warangal. Similarly, other MPs will participate in the agitation in their own constituencies. The move by the Congress MPs is significant because the State Government has decided to go all out to foil the rail roko stir.

Meanwhile, the State Government’s attempt to end the strike by its employees in the Telangana region failed as employees’ representatives walked out of the meeting midway.

The Government had invited the Telangana employees’ leaders to convince them about the need to end the strike. While the employees were represented by leaders like Swami Goud, Devi Prasad, Srinvas Goud and others, the Government was represented by Finance Minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy and deputy Chief Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha. The union leaders wanted the Government to immediately withdraw the ESMA and GO number 177 (stopping the salaries of the striking employees) and ordering an inquiry into the attack on Swami Goud by the policemen.
