The decision of the Congress High Command to field former PCC Chief D Srinivas who is known for his strong pro-Telangana sentiments, for the lone vacant seat of the Legislative Council has come as a surprise to all those who have been aspiring for the seat as well as senior leaders. Congress leadership has broken its long tradition of not fielding a candidate who lost an election to the lower house, to the upper house, in selecting D Srinivas. Srinivas was defeated in the assembly elections in 2009 as well as in the by-elections caused by the resignations of TRS members next year.
According to information, the PCC Chief Botcha Satyanarayana has prevailed upon the party central leadership to give the seat to DS. This decision of the high command disappoints Kanteti Satyanarayana Raju a senior leader who has been serving the party since 1970. He has visited Delhi and lobbied for the seat. Several other leaders also recommended his name to the high command. However the Congress top leaders appear to have decided that a strong leader from Telangana should be chosen, to handle the present turmoil over the statehood issue. Moreover, his contribution along with Dr. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in bringing the Congress party to power in 2004 and 2009 also appears to have prompted the high command to take decision in his favour.
Reports also say that DS would also be accommodated in the state cabinet, so that he would have the necessary authority to handle the Telangana issue.
Now it is to be seen, if nominating DS to the council was any indication to a positive decision on Telangana.
