TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu has been always evasive about Telangana. His fear is that if he supports Telangana state, his party would be washed off in rest of the state. But if he doesn’t, it would be washed off in Telangana. To surmount this tricky problem, he has invented the two-eye theory. He said both the regions were like his two eyes and he has to safeguard both. This theory has drawn great controversy and severe criticism from his own party in Telangana. Senior leaders like Nagam Janardana Reddy, Jogi Ramanna and Harishwar Reddy, Venugopalachary and others parted company with TDP. Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy has resigned from the party and joined TRS, and is contesting again from his Banswada constituency as TRS candidate. Now MLA Gampa Govardhan has also come out and is on his way to TRS.

Even as all signs are indicating a clear erosion of his party in Telangana region, Chandrababu has asserted on Tuesday that he was a neutral on the state bifurcation issue. As he is the leader of the major opposition party, this statement of his will have great impact.

Union Home Minister Chidambaram while stating reasons for not taking a decision on Telangana, has said that parties like TDP, Congress and even YSR Congress have not yet stated their stand on the Telangana issue.

YSR Congress has just one MP and one MLA officially elected on the party ticket. However, Chidambaram has shown even such small party’s silence on the issue as the reason for not deciding Telangana. When that is the case, one can imagine the impact of the statement of the chief of the biggest party after Congress.

Chandrababu is not a political novice. Though some TDP leaders are stating that Chandrababu’s neutrality statement was a slip of tongue, no one would believe that such a seasoned person would allow such a costly slip occur.

Other opposition parties, mainly the TRS are stating that neutrality is nothing but sitting on the fence (or cat sitting on the wall) and blocking the Telangana formation. It is clear that Chandrababu is firm that he doesn’t want to loose the Andhra cadre and voter, as they form a majority in the state. He is taking a deliberate risk about his party’s prospects in Telangana. Though he said he has given freedom to leaders and cadres of all the three regions to act as per the people’s wishes, it would not convince any one. As a party, it should have a firm stand. National parties CPI, CPI (M) and BJP have taken clear stands. It is the Congress and the TDP which lacked that clear stand. And this is giving excuse to the center to delay decision on the issue.
