The Telangana Political JAC convener, Prof. Kodandaram, who set out for Singareni Yatra on Sunday, was taken into custody by the police near Janagama in the district. However, he was released at Alair.

Earlier, a group of Telangana leaders left for Singareni in a bus in the morning. As the bus reached Pembarti near Janagam, the police stopped it and arrested Prof. Kodandaram, Mr Addanki Dayakar, Mr Suryam and others. The police said that the TJAC leaders were taken into custody under Section 151 IPC. The Janagam Deputy superintendent of police, Mr Nagaraju, said that the arrested leaders were being shifted to Hyderabad.

Reacting to the arrest of Prof. Kodandaram and TJAC leaders, the TRS supremo, Mr K Chandrasekhara Rao, described the arrests as illegal as they were peacefully proceeding to Singareni in a bus. He demanded that the police immediately release the leaders unconditionally.

Condemning the arrest of Prof. Kodandaram and others, the senior national BJP leader and former Union minister, Mr Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, demanded that the police release them unconditionally. The senior TRS leader and Medak MP, Ms Vijayashanti, also condemned the arrests. She alleged that the State government was conspiring to vitiate the Telangana movement and the ongoing Sakala Janula Samme by arm-twisting methods.

On receipt of the information about the TJAC chief’s arrest, a wave of protests erupted in the entire Telangana region. The enraged Telangana activists resorted to road blockade in Alair and Bhongir in Nalgonda district bringing the vehicular traffic to a grinding halt.

The OU Students JAC and Telangana Employees JACs and others condemned the arrest of the TJAC convener and demanded his unconditional release immediately.
