Stepping up pressure on the Centre, the Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee (TEJAC) on Monday made it clear that the Telangana Congress leaders should quit their posts to achieve Telangana statehood.
At a meeting with Steering Committee of Telangana Congress chairman and Rajya Sabha member K Keshava Rao, TEJAC leaders including K Swamy Goud, C Vittal, Srinivas Goud and Devi Prasad here, the latter reportedly told him that the Telangana Congress leaders would lose people’s support if they did not play an active role now.
“This is the last time we went to meet the Telangana Congress leaders and told them that we won’t go to them again unless they took a decision on resigning to their positions,’ Mr Vittal said later.
He further said: “The Telangana Congress leaders will get credit for their historic decision taken at a historic time. We even offered them to lead the movement for separate state and assured to follow them.”
Reiterating their decision to continue the general strike, the TEJAC leaders also said that they would not be able to win the next general elections in 2014, even if the Congress announced Telangana, for their reluctance to participate directly in the agitation. Mr Keshava Rao was understood to have explained the present situation, the differences and the lack of unity among the MPs, MLAs and ministers.
At a separate meeting with former Minister Komatireddy Venkata Reddy, the TEJAC leaders discussed how to take the movement further and resolved to continue the stir till the Centre announces road map for separate state. Mr Venkata Reddy said that he has already quit the Cabinet and Assembly and always supported the cause.
Later addressing the reporters, Mr Swamy Goud said that they would call off the 35-day-old strike only if they receive a firm assurance from the ministers. “We called on Mr Keshava Rao to thank the Congress leaders for their support to the rail roko programme,” he said and expressed anger at the police for filing cases against him though he did not take part in the protest.
