The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on Saturday said it was aware of the “gravity” of the ongoing agitation in Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region and needs “some more time” to find a solution to the vexed issue. “We are aware of the gravity of the situation. We are in the process of consultations. We need some more time and further consultations,” Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters in New Delhi.

Mukherjee said the Congress core committee, headed by party chief Sonia Gandhi, discussed the issue on Friday. The discussions continued Saturday, he said. The Congress has been under pressure from its leaders in Telangana region to take a decision to end the ongoing agitation for a separate state.
