The TRS MP, Ms Vijayashanti, said on Thursday that she did not believe that the Congress would give Telangana. “Though the Sakala Janula Samme has crossed a month, why is the government silent?” she asked. The MP also clarified that she had no plans to join the BJP. The TRS MLA, Mr K.T. Rama Rao, meanwhile, said that the DGP’s statements were highly provocative and accused him of behaving like a Congress leader. “He should shed khaki and don khadi,” he said. “The DGP is making political statements that if anyone indulges in rail roko they will face arrest and even life imprisonment. Such statements will have serious repercussions,” he said.

Meanwhile, the DGP, Mr V. Dinesh Reddy, on Thursday appealed to the Telangana leaders to defer the rail roko programme indefinitely stating that it would inconvenience job seekers, vendors and commuters.
The DGP told media persons that the police had decided not to allow the agitation programme as the Railway Board, Government of India and Government of Andhra Pradesh were serious about it.

The state police, who would usually book agitators taking part in rail roko programmes under section 151 CrPC, has decided to invoke the much more stringent Railways Act. According to cops, this could derail the stir as offences booked under the Act are non-bailable. “We will deal with the cases of tampering with tracks and removal of clips strictly as our major concern is the safety of passengers. Punishment for this offence ranges from 10 years imprisonment to life sentence. We have identified and caught the man who had removed the fish plates at Manuguru and he will get a life sentence,” the DGP said.

He made it clear that his intention was not to threaten but to educate the agitators about the legal hurdles they would face. “We have documentary evidence of leaders calling for Vanta Varpu and for placing bullock carts on tracks. This is enough to book them,” Mr Reddy said.
