UGC committee visits Telangana University

A high level expert committee from the University Grants Commission (UGC) visited the Telangana University on Wednesday to assess the university’s eligibility for granting recognition.

The five-member committee, headed by Prof C Thangamuthu, former vice-chancellor of the Bharatidasan University, will assess the infrastructure, courses, buildings, laboratories, and other facilities in the university to find its suitability for according the 12 (B) status.

The UGC’s 12 (B) status will enable the university to get regular funding from the apex body in higher education and will also help it get automatic funding from the successive 5-year plans from the Central Government.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development, Science and Technology, and other agencies will also fund various research and other development works to the university.

Telangana University Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohd Akbar Ali Khan informed the Media men that TU would be the first university in the Telangana region and the second in the State after Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa, to get the UGC expert committee’s visit.

He said that he had been pursuing for the Expert Committee’s visit to the university ever since he took as the vice-chancellor of this new university.

The university’s teaching and non-teaching members, led by the VC and Registrar Prof M Yadagiri, have been working as a team to develop the university. As part of their two-day assessment, there will be department-wise inspections and visits to other facilities like hostels.

The committe will also visit Bhiknur campus of the university. The UGC committee comprises Dr S C Singh, advisor to the President of India, Prof S K Saidapur, former vice chancellor of Dharwad University, Karnataka, Prof Pema Ram, and Dr G Srinivas.
