All India Congress Committee official spokesman Abhishek Singhvi on Wednesday stated that the Telangana state issue should not be linked to the division of Uttar Pradesh proposed by Chief Minister Mayawati.

Talking to media persons, Abhishek Singhvi described the move of Mayawati as political gimmick to divert the attention of people with an eye on the upcoming elections. He said the people of Uttar Pradesh would not believe the tricks of Mayawati.

Singhvi said that the government was making sincere efforts to resolve the Telangana issue and consultations with all the stake holders has been going on daily basis. He denied reports that Centre was considering constitution of second States Reorganisation Commission to address the demand for smaller states.

He said the government would take a decision on smaller states only after the Uttar Pradesh elections. He also said the Congress party would never resort to politicize the priority issues
