Package and regional council for Telangana?

AICC General Secretary’s statement that a key announcement on Telangana would be made shortly is being viewed by agitators with suspicion. Reports state that this key announcement would be some fabulous package for the region and a strong and autonomous Regional Council and not an outright bifurcation of the state.

Opponents of the TRS are alleging that the party already knows about what is going to be announced and had accepted it as part of its agreement at New Delhi. They say that the TRS has come to terms with the Congress leadership and the central government and had accepted the Polavaram tender and other benefits in return for its acceptance for the proposal on Telangana. It has also been alleged that the Telangana Employees’ JAC leader Swamy Goud was also made to accept the Congress deal in return for his safe passage in the land scam he has been facing.

Though TRS has been claiming monopoly rights over the Telangana movement, it does not mean that all others involved in the movement would accept it. There is certainly going to be an intensified uprising if the Centre stops short of announcing Telangana state. This will not be acceptable to most other players.

UP Chief Minister Mayavati has given the Congress party an opportunity to revive the Second States Reorganization Commission, by her resolve to divide her state into four smaller ones. Her announcement has put the Congress in a fix as it has to decide one way or the other on the UP issue as elections are round the corner. Congress is likely to keep the issue alive by appointing second SRC and stating that it would abide by its decision. This move would also ensure that it would not have to take a bitter decision on Telangana for the time being.

If this is the kind of announcement that the Centre would be making, Telangana might be once again embroiled in turbulence. It is not easy to guess the anger of the people in that event. Telangana movement has already slipped into the hands of the people, led by students. It is not going to be easy to pacify them.
