The 56th formation day of Andhra Pradesh was celebrated Tuesday under the shadow of the Telangana agitation seeking to divide the state into two. The official celebrations were marred by a “Betrayal Day” called by the pro-Telangana organisations and the hoisting of black flags. Majority of the ministers and MLAs from the Telangana region also stayed away from the official celebrations demanding the immediate start of the process of formation of Telangana state.
While Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy hoisted national flag and took salute at a parade at the NTR Stadium in Hyderabad amid tight security, Telangana activists hoisted black flags on government offices all over the region and tried to disrupt the official programmes. In Adilabad and Warangal districts, the local MLAs Jogu Ramanna and Vinay Bhaskar disrupted the official programmes. Ramanna was arrested by police when he raised “Jai Telangana slogans” at the Collectorate Ground where the district collector (chief administrative) was hoisting the national flag.
Vinay Bhaskar fell unconscious when police used force to disperse pro-Telangna activists at the Kakatiya University grounds. Bhaskar went on the dais and removed the posters shouting Jai Telangana slogans. With a large number of students supporting him, police found it difficult to take him in to custody. In the scuffle, he fell unconscious.
