Tension mounted when police tried to stop the rally of OU students from Arts College to Gun Park. Shouting that the AP Formation Day should be observed as a black day, students started their rally from the Arts College. However, police have stopped them at the NCC gate stating that there was no permission for the rally because of the imposition of prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr.P.C. There was a heated argument between the students and the police. They pushed and jostled each other.

Later, the police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear gas when the students started pelting stones. Tension prevailed for over two hours. Police diverted the vehicular traffic on the university road. A heavy posse of police force was stationed on the campus who were observing the situation when reports last came in.
