Close aides of veteran anti graft crusader Anna Hazare has asserted that they would not compromise on any key provisions of the Lokpal Bill. “Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is crucial for probing graft cases and should be brought under the ambit of the ombudsman, much against the wishes of the central government,” said Hazare aide Prashant Bhushan.

“Subjects like CBI , selection process of Lokpal, lower bureaucracy, Prime Minister and citizen’’s charter would not be compromised on. If the government comes up with a useless Judicial Accountability bill which has no provisions to investigate graft nor for the creation of an independent body- either or judges or of judges and government then we are saying that the investigation of graft should come under the Lokpal,” Bhushan added.

Meanwhile, Hazare aide and RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal said that sans CBI the Lokpal is like an ”empty box.” “The CBI should come under the ambit of the Lokpal which means that either the CBI director is appointed by the Lokpal or the process of selection should be similar to the one laid out for members of the Lokpal. The Lokpal should handle the superintendence, administrative and financial aspects of CBI. CBI will report to the Lokpal. The Delhi Special Police Establishment Act should be amended such that wherever the word ”central government” is mentioned it should be replaced by ”Lokpal.” All the employees shall be selected and appointed by the Lokpal. The Lokpal will also oversee their disciplinary control,” said Kejriwal.

He further hoped that a consensus would be arrived over the provisions of the bill that had crippled business in the entire monsoon session of the Parliament. “We hope that there will be a political consensus on all the issues related to Lokpal and a strong Lokpal bill would emerge out of it,” said Kejriwal. On Sunday, Hazare observed a daylong protest fast in New Delhi to pressurise the government for passing a strong Lokpal Bill in the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament.

The 74-year-old social activist has also warned the government that he would sit on an indefinite fast from December 27 at the Ramlila Maidan here if a strong Lokpal Bill is not passed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
